The Walk of St Francis
The Walk of St Francis is considered one of the great spiritual walks given its religious and symbolic value. Its itinerary retraces the road that St Francis took on his journey from Assisi towards Gubbio, representing Francis' choice to renounce his worldly possessions and his father's authority so as to fully convert and found the first Franciscan community. The Walk begins at the sanctuary of La Verna, where Francis received the Holy Stigmata, and arrives in Assisi, the Umbrian town where he was born, passing through Gubbio, famous for the episode in which Francis encountered the wolf. The Walk, which is 190 km long, is illustrated in a map that enables pilgrims to orient themselves among well-worn trails, valleys, and slopes while immersed in nature and silence, passing through places of spiritual, cultural, and artistic interest.
